Williams Still Starting QB as Heels Travel To Tech

Tar Heel coach Larry Fedora opened his weekly press conference Monday with a definitive statement that senior Marquise Williams is still Carolina’s starting quarterback as the team begins preparation for Georgia Tech. The Heels and Yellow Jackets kick off at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Atlanta.

“Marquise Williams is our starter,” Fedora said. “He knows why I did what I did on Saturday. There is no can or worms to open. I have complete confidence in Quise.”

Williams started as usual Saturday against Delaware but was taken out late in the first half with Carolina holding a slim 10-7 lead. Sophomore Mitch Trubisky entered and promptly directed the offense to scoring drives on Carolina’s last two possessions of the half. Then Carolina rolled it up on the Blue Hens in the second half for a 41-14 win with Trubisky hitting 17-of-20 passes for 312 yards and four TDs.

“Against Delaware, I was looking for a spark,” Fedora said. “I think Mitch added that lift. He got rolling and got hot and when things were moving, I didn’t feel like going the other way.”

Asked specifically what Fedora didn’t like from Williams, Fedora answered: “There were some things happening that were not what he has been coached to do. For a guy with a lot of experience in our offense, that was not what he was supposed to do.”

Meanwhile, the Tar Heel defense is preparing to face a triple-option attack from Tech that has given Carolina fits since Paul Johnson took the job a decade ago. Carolina hasn’t won in Atlanta since 1997.

“The triple option is all about eye discipline and doing your job,” linebacker Jeff Schoettmer said. “You have to take care of your job and trust your teammates to do their jobs.”
