March came in like the proverbial lion with the Tar Heels practicing amid piles of snow and in chilly temperatures, but spring ball is officially underway. Coach Larry Fedora and three new defensive assistant coaches put their team through three sessions this week before dismissing them for a week for spring break.
Invitations went out in late February for the annual spring reunion set for March 27-28. The annual Morris Mason Golf Tournament will be held Friday morning at UNC Finley Golf Course and a reception and dinner will follow that night at the Loudermilk Center. A scrimmage will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday; it is open to the public.
There will be no traditional spring Blue-White Game this year because of construction work ongoing in Kenan Stadium.
If you have not received a mailing on the reunion, contact Teresa Vanderford in the football office at 919/962-9144.
Lettermen will have the opportunity to meet the three new coaches already in the program and likely a fourth that will be hired as soon as possible. Gene Chizik is the new defensive coordinator, John Papuchis coaches linebackers and Charlton Warren runs the secondary. Vacant is the defensive line job following Keith Gilmore’s move to Notre Dame two weeks ago.
“It’s a great fit so far,” Fedora says of Chizik, who last coached at Auburn in 2012, and the others, each of whom are moving from Nebraska. “They’re working tirelessly, none of the new coaches have families here yet, so they’re spending all of their time on ball. Since they’re installing from scratch, it’s been good for them.”
