Tar Heel Lettermen are invited to participate and contribute to the third annual Rams & Rivals for Hearts and Hope Golf Tournament that will be played Friday June 17 at Catawba Springs Golf Course in Hickory. Mark Sigmon (1984) is president of the Hearts and Hope Foundation, Inc., a tax exempt 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping children and young adults affected by cancer and heart defects while also providing assistance to others in this same age range with daily expenses (shoes, coats, food, etc.). Proceeds from this year’s tournament/fundraising challenge will provide financial assistance to a 14-year-old boy being raised by a single parent who was recently diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and to a 2-year-old girl, also being raised by a single parent, who has a congenital heart defect that is causing heart and lung failure. This year’s challenge will once again consist of 60 two-man teams of former athletes, students, alumni, supporters and fans from the University of North Carolina (RAMS) and all of the other ACC schools (RIVALS). In addition to the direct competition on the golf course, these teams will be competing to see which supporters can raise the most money for this wonderful cause. The organization raised over $70,000 in 2015 and more than half of that came from the golf event. Registration and lunch begin at 10:30 the day of the event with a 12 Noon shotgun start. The format is two-man captain’s choice. The course is located at 820 Wandering Lane NE in Hickory.
