The Carolina football family has just learned of the passing of Jim LeCompte, a three-year Letterman from 1959-61 and co-captain of the 1961 team. LeCompte was first-team All-ACC in 1961 as a guard and won the ACC's Jacobs Blocking Trophy that year as well. He was third-team All-America that year by NEA.
LeCompte died March 10, 2011, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem as a result of complications from heart surgery. He spent 22 years in the Air Force, earning several awards and commendations, including the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. After retiring from the Air Force, he devoted his life to education and working with exceptional children in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth school system.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marie, and two sons, George (Butch) a former tackle at Nebraska, and James III (Len) and their families.
